Dallas makes 13 cuts to training camp roster

FRISCO — The Stars made drastic cuts to their training camp roster on Friday, as they either loaned, released or waived 13 players. Here are the transactions:

Waived (6): Forwards Tanner Kero, Rhett Gardner and Riley Barber, defensemen Jerad Rosburg, Ben Gleason and Joseph Cecconi.

Loaned to AHL affiliate Texas (4): Forwards Matej Blumel and Antonio Stranges, defenseman Dawson Barteaux and goaltender Adam Scheel.

Released from PTO (2): Forwards Jordan Kawaguchi and Curtis McKenzie.

Released from ATO (1): Goaltender Matt Murray.

The Stars cannot loan waived players to the AHL until they clear waivers on Saturday. Kawaguchi, McKenzie and Murray are all signed to AHL contracts with Texas.

The biggest surprise cut was Blumel. A dark horse candidate to crack the roster, Blumel had a strong Traverse City tournament and coupled it with a decent scrimmage in Cedar Park. The 22-year-old Czech figured to be one of the players to benefit from the absence of Ty Dellandrea, but is instead headed south.

No Hintz: Stars forward Roope Hintz did not participate in Friday’s scrimmage, one day after he temporarily left Thursday’s preseason game due to a hit by Minnesota Wild forward Brandon Baddock. Hintz cleared concussion protocol and returned to the game.

DeBoer said Hintz was “a little stiff” on Friday.

“Just didn’t make sense to rush him considering where we’re at on this,” DeBoer said. “I’m not worried long-term about it.”
