Lucy Culleton and Stephen Frend were presented with their Dairymaster Ag Science Student Awards for the best final year project presentations at the South Eastern Technological University at this year’s National Plowing Championships.
Culleton, a Windgap Co. Kilkenny native, completed her project on the effect of grazing method in the autumn and nutrient application in the spring on grass availability on spring-calving dairy farms.
Stephen Frend from Toomevara in Co. Tipperary undertook a project comparing the use of artificial synchronization and natural synchronization on conception rates of breeding ewes as a means of compacting the lambing season and increasing litter size in an early lambing flock.
According to Dr Michael Breen, program leader for the BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Science, “the Dairymaster Ag Science Student Award process will help students realise the relevance of their final year projects to a world beyond college.”
“The bursary is very welcome in helping our students make the transition to the workplace following their studies,” he concluded.
